Citus Data is a distributed database company that enhances PostgreSQL to provide horizontal scalability for modern applications. Founded in 2011 by Stanford graduates and Amazon veterans, the company was acquired by Microsoft in 2019. Citus Data addresses the challenge of scaling databases without losing essential relational features like transactions and joins. The company offers PostgreSQL scalability solutions through three deployment models: an open-source extension available on GitHub, a commercial on-premises version for organizations needing dedicated support, and Citus Cloud, a fully-managed database-as-a-service that handles billions of transactions daily. Citus Data also developed cstore_fdw, a PostgreSQL columnar store for analytic workloads. Citus Data serves a diverse range of customers, including SaaS companies, large enterprises, and Fortune 100 companies, particularly those requiring multi-tenant applications and real-time analytics. Following its acquisition, Citus Data continues to be part of Microsoft's cloud database offerings, integrating its technology into Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL while remaining dedicated to open-source development.
