The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is an intergovernmental treaty established in 1951, overseen by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). With 185 contracting parties, the IPPC is dedicated to protecting global plant resources and is recognized by the World Trade Organization for developing plant health standards. The IPPC's primary objectives include preventing the introduction and spread of plant pests, protecting farmers from pest-related economic losses, and safeguarding the environment from invasive species. It facilitates safe international trade in plants and plant products, contributing to global food security. The organization develops International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs), which serve as a scientific basis for countries to create national legislation to protect plant resources. The IPPC also provides training and resources to support member countries in enhancing their phytosanitary capacity and promoting collaboration on plant health issues.
