LightSail Energy was an American startup focused on compressed air energy storage technology, founded in 2008 in Berkeley, California. The company developed an isothermal compressed air energy storage system, known as Advanced Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (AA-CAES). This technology converted electrical energy into compressed air and reversed the process to generate electrical energy when needed. A unique aspect of their system involved spraying water droplets during compression and decompression to enhance efficiency. LightSail Energy raised around $70 million in venture capital from notable investors, including Khosla Ventures, Peter Thiel, Bill Gates, and Total S.A. The company created two 10 MWh storage systems, one located in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, and the other in California. Despite its innovative approach, LightSail Energy ceased operations in March 2018 after facing financial challenges.
