SteelBuy was a UK-based digital marketplace for buying and selling metals, launched in December 2022 by thyssenkrupp Materials Services. The platform aimed to enhance metals trading through digitalization, focusing on efficiency and anonymity. It primarily dealt with steel and aluminum, allowing sellers to list materials with specifications and prices, while buyers could quickly find and purchase these materials. Under the leadership of CEO Terry Sargeant, SteelBuy achieved significant growth, completing over 300 transactions and generating over £1 million in sales by mid-2023. The platform featured intelligent matching technology, integrated logistics, and invoicing, which streamlined the trading process. It served a diverse range of clients in the metals sector, including producing mills, steel service centers, stockholders, and traders, all while ensuring buyer and seller anonymity. Despite its ambitions, SteelBuy discontinued operations in October 2025 after a strategic review.
