What is this?
Revenue growth rate measures the percentage increase in revenue from one period to the next. MoM (month-over-month), QoQ (quarter-over-quarter), and YoY (year-over-year) growth rates each serve different purposes. CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) smooths out volatility to show the average annual growth rate over multiple periods. These metrics are the primary way investors benchmark startup performance.
Why it matters
Growth rate is arguably the single most important metric for early-stage startups. Y Combinator famously targets 5-7% weekly growth for its companies. Investors use growth rates to project future revenue, compare companies, and determine valuations. Consistent MoM growth of 15-20% is considered excellent for seed-stage companies. Understanding your growth trajectory helps you plan hiring, fundraising timing, and resource allocation.
How to use this calculator
Enter your previous and current period revenue to calculate the simple growth rate. Select whether you are measuring monthly, quarterly, or yearly growth to see the annualized rate. Use the CAGR section to calculate the compound growth rate over multiple periods — enter your starting revenue, ending revenue, and number of periods (months or years). The projection table shows where you will be in 12 months if growth continues at the current rate.
